The Green Family to fund the George Shawe Memorial Scholarship Award

Artist_v1_greenfamilyTo honor the memory of a great artist and humanitarian, and to support the efforts of young Putnam County, New York artists, The Green Family announced that it will fund the annual George Shawe Memorial Scholarship Visual Arts Award.

This cash award was established in memory of George Shawe, a highly acclaimed visual artist, whose beautiful works can be found in the most prominent art galleries and private collections throughout the world. An active supporter of the arts in Putnam County, and longtime Putnam Arts Council Trustee, Shawe was instrumental in establishing the Levine Art Center to showcase regional artists. He co-founded the permanent art collection at the Putnam Hospital Center and helped to establish the George C. Merkel Gallery, to exhibit art within the Hospital.

Mr. Shawe, who died in 1995, continued to forge his legacy as a respected educator and mentor, who encouraged students to pursue artistic excellence. His late wife, Pam Shawe, family and friends established the scholarship in his name, in 1998.

“George Shawe was committed to the Putnam Arts Council, and he inspired young artists to develop their talents, and tackle their dreams. This award is dedicated to those same goals, and we are proud to keep it going in his memory”, said David Green, President of Results Advertising.

Each year, scholarship applications are accepted from Putnam County high school seniors who plan to pursue the arts in college, or in the workplace, upon graduation. The selection process is highly competitive and includes artwork, teacher recommendations and students’ written expressions of their goals and interests.
